“For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” (Romans 11:29)
One of our problems we have in the world today is that we look around and see some men do mighty miracles almost making us believe that they are holy men of God. However, they are deceived. The miracles make them feel that they are great but they are not.
I will never forget what happened to us down in Miami. For years and years it baffled me. If I tell you now, it will baffle you, too, unless I also tell you the answer to it. This man I want to tell you about had a gift of the Spirit. To be honest, I do not know what spirit it was, but he believed it was God as he was a Christian. His gift was the most peculiar one you have ever seen. If you had bad teeth you would go to him, because he would fix them for you. He was a “spiritual dentist!”
One time he went to a church where there was a girl who told God she wanted a new tooth in a particular spot. But she did not want just any tooth, she wanted a gold tooth. She was praying for it at home by herself. The “dentist” came and said, “Come here.” As he put his hand in her mouth, she screamed, “Ahhh!” When everybody looked, she had a beautiful gold tooth in the spot where the space was.
This man came down to Miami one day, to a little church, to show us the gift of God. It was a church of one particular sister who was the pastor of it. She got up in the meeting and said, “Brethren, I am sorry, but I am going to dismiss this meeting. This man lives in adultery. The woman beside him is not his wife. We do not believe that he should do any miracles here tonight.”
Everybody was shocked. The elders that were present got together with her and said, “Let us see what he can do now after you revealed him as a means by which we might determine whether it is of God or not.” The man came up and looked like a dog when you whip it. He was so depressed. He said, “Brethren, I am so sorry that this was done tonight. I do not think I can do anything. You just have to pray for me.” He never denied he was in adultery. He just said, “You have to pray for me. Let me try and see if I can do anything.” That night, it seemed like there was more healing done with the humiliation he suffered than at any previous time.
One case really shocked me. There was Doctor Q, who was a doctor of psychology and probably had many cavities in his mouth. The “spiritual dentist” laid hands on his mouth, spoke the word and all of Doctor Q’s teeth were filled with gold. All of his teeth! Doctor Q said, “I know what to do.” The next morning he went to a dentist, who scraped off some of the gold filling and sent it to a lab to check it. The lab said it was not gold, but they did not know what it was. They said there was no metal like that on earth. I lived in Doctor Q’s house at that time. I would like to see him now after twenty years to find out whether he still has all his teeth filled with gold. But this was the story. And the man was living in adultery.
The key to it can be found in the Scriptures. It says in Romans 11:29 that the gifts of the Spirit are given “…without repentance.” Brethren, do not be deceived by miracles, because you can do the greatest miracles, yet it does not make you a better Christian. If you believe God, you can do miracles. It is just a matter of whether you believe God or not. But knowing God and having His nature imparted into their souls is for those who love Him and serve Him with all of their hearts walking in holiness in every step they take.
